Adding Ram to a Dual G5 tower

I ordered a 1 gig ram kit from OWC this Saturday for my pops for $99 for his dual 2 ghz G5 tower.
I've added ram to my G4 tower among other computers. Do I have to lay down G5 on it's side to add ram? It can't be that hard right?

You don't necessarily have to turn it on its side, but it may make installation easier. The slots are tight and took more force than I expected to seat the modules. Use a good flashlight to make sure you're aligning the module correctly. Be sure to take static electricity precautions.

Installation is definitely easier if you lay it down... less room to error too since your pushing straight down - which is a bit easer in terms of alignment. If going to do it on it's side, which you can do, I'd just make sure you've got it up against something so it can't shift around. the weight of the G5 standing is not enough resistance for the insertion of the parts while it's in that tower position.

Also - if it's the DDR2 model - really recommend laying it down. The DDR2 modules are a bit more sensitive to flexing... so you don't want to be wobbling with them. Laid flat down so you are pushing straight down is really the best method for installing.

Larry,

What is the DDR2 model. Dual core and quad core G5s were introduced soon after he bought his G5. Also, I heard an incident where ram purchased from OWC failed some kind of ram test and they were replaced. Should I test the ram modules once installed or do you think it was a freak accident on OWC's part. I hope OWC test ram modules before shipping out. (or is that too much to ask?)

JDC,

thanks for the video link.
I guess you don't need to reset the cuda switch and zap the p-ram after upgrading memory eh?

Simpson, the new dual core Macs are the DDR2 models. Lay it on its side. Makes things sooo much easier.

defectice RAM is never the fault of the supplier. You should test before and after installation.

All of our memory is tested and we stand by them for lifetime. :)
