iMovie 6 HD is BAD NEWS

Let me start by saying I'm a big fan of the iLife apps and have been for a while. In this latest iteration, iPhoto is greatly improved.

But I say this without equivocation or hestitation...

iMovie 6 is absolute junk! It is unstable and buggy, and that includes the 6.0.1 update. This post provides further documentation: [discussions.apple.com]

I would strongly suggest you stay in iMovie 4.

I'm not sure what conclusion we're supposed to draw from those posts from January. Three days after starting the discussion, the guy who started it posted that he found that the problems were being caused by a 3rd party codec, and that all of the iApps worked fine.

---------
It was the 3ivx codec. As soon as I removed that, it's plist, and it's preferences. EVERYTHING works. iMovie, iPhoto, iWeb, Garageband... everything..... no crashes and no hangs.

whew.....

I'm having no trouble with iMovie 6, so I have to disagree with you.

Interesting because I swore up and down that iMovie 4 was buggy, not ready for prime time junk. At least it didn't get along with my G4. No probs with iM6.

While I don't agree with the assessment that iMovie 6 is junk, bad news, etc, I can make one statement which I find to be personally 100% accurate: iMovie 1.0 was, hands-down, the most rock-solidly stable version of iMovie ever to be produced. It never crashed, never hung, never had any problems. In my experience.

I agree, iphoto was a great improvement, butimovie 6 is unusable in my school. This is with a clean install of tiger, no 3rd party anything, it has issues. The forums on apples web site support this. Instead of new versions, lets fix these first.

iMovie 6 is working for me, aside from the inability to create titles within a TV-safe area anymore. That's a giant backwards step.

I do not have iMovie 6, but I took the time to read the apple discussions.

If you read the thread mentioned above, you will find that there are documented fixes for these problems. Most relate to third party plug-ins like flip4mac, divx codecs, and third party effects plugins that have not been updated yet.

These problems can sometimes occur even after a clean install or on a new machine because apple sometimes provides third party plug-ins or trial plug-ins in the install package.

iMovie 4 was the worst so far for me, nothing that I could do would allow me to make a slide show style movie longer than 10 minutes without major problems. iMovie 5 so far is the most stable and suffered from the same growing pains with plug-ins at first.

I have completed a lot of movies in iMovie6 and it works pretty good - as far as I'm concerned, the best yet. The only problem I have had is with an old GeeThree set of transitions that lock it up. I do have GeeThree 9 and it works flawlessly.

I do understand your frustration, but it can be fixed if you will troubleshoot it.

I have done several fairly large projects in iMovie '06 without a single problem. IMHO, it is the best version yet.
