Some places will do a scan for cheap but just about all the reliable professional data recovery services will want $800 to $2000 depending on how bad it is.
Is it IDE or SATA? Put the bare drive into a Mac and run Disk Warrior.

Oh, it might matter how the drive is formatted. Is it FAT32 or HFS+? I don't know how it works on FAT32.

Are you in SF?
Start searching for local tech services.
And yes, recovery can be over over $1000 easy.

Connected via what interface?
If connected via USB, did you use the "power sharing cable" and connect it to 2 USB ports?
Previously mounted and worked properly on what model computer running what OS? Have you tried it on that same computer?
Does it show up in the left panel of the Disk Utility window? If so, what happens when you try to repair the disk?
...
If the drive has really died and the data is "crazy important," the recovery price (which IME can fall anywhere in a range from $800-$7500 with a professional recovery service) should not be that big a concern. They also do rush jobs for a bit more money. Call Drive Savers for a free quote:

I'm assuming that this is one of the situations where the data is more important then the drive. I would crack the case and take out the drive out. (It is possible that the interface board is bad, and not the drive.) Then I would pop it into another case or connect it up to an internal bus on a desktop computer. It could be either a sata drive or an ide drive (less likely). If you're not comfortable with hardware, then I would find a shop or an experienced computer tech. If you need to send it out for a hard drive recovery service, then it is gong to be pretty expensive (hundred dollars plus) for even preliminary scan/estimate and hundreds for the actual recovery. If and when you get the data off, the this drive should be chucked out (I doubt whether LaCie is going to honor a warranty when the case has been opened.) My 2 cents.

I think it has to be SATA. It's a 2.5" drive (portable, bus powered). There are no 500 GB 2.5" IDE drives.
Have you tried it with a different connection? (USB vs. FireWire if that's an option?)
Before you send it off, see if the trial version of Data Rescue can do anything:

Good luck.

For future reference, Diskwarrior can recover data off drives where the desktop cannot be read or rebuilt.
They used to hide the function, if you press option (if I remember correctly) the rebuild button changes to a recovery button or something such.
Takes awhile but it's save me a couple of times.

well, i'm ford, and it's just a folder that i drag all my desktop files to to keep the
desktop fairly neat...i hate desktops covered completely with files, so much so that the
harddrive icon is even covered with tons a files... it's not my actual crap...
