They are crazy at work

A few months ago I put in a request for a new Mac Book Pro. I explained in great detail that my present Windows tower and 5 year old 12 inch powerbook could be replaced by one new powerbook and that my G4 was so old it was getting difficult to work with. (I travel 25% of the time and do a lot of presentations) Today I was told, they had found me a new mac else-wear in the company, and it would have to do. It was in the mailroom. Fearing finding an even older powerbook, or a LCIII or something, I ventured down to the mail room. he's what they sent:

Mac Pro 2.26 8 core 32GBB RAM, 4 640GB drives, 2 video cards
2 30 inch screens.

Holy piss! It's 10K worth of gear. it's three months old and not overly portable. Mind you I'm not arguing. It's on my desk and running as we speak. A little investigation turns up some executive ordered it so he could "learn photoshop". I have a 7x7' cubicle, so only one screen for now. Maybe I will buy a powerbook myself and move the company sticker over from the G4.

Wow. Santa came early!

Any chance they'd sell you the second monitor to get it off of their books?

they have no money for a new laptop for you to work with, but they found money so an executive could buy a toy.
which he is now bored with because he was probably disappointed that it took "work" and maybe a bit of lurnin to use Photoshop.

wtf was he trying to mess around with Photoshop for?
is that part of his job?

I'm going to guess the company bought him 10K in camera gear the month before or something.

I may hide the second monitor and use it as a bribe when I need it. The monitors are not even on the property list. It's listed as 1 macintosh computer, serial XXXX.

I priced it out at 11.5K on the apple site. And none of it's guts are aftermarket, it was orderd this way. Wow. And they shipped it to me FedEx overnight at a cost of $250. No Applecare though, cheap bastards!

you are a clever lad.

maybe you could sell one of the Displays and put the money towards a new laptop?

would they allow you to sell the Mac Pro and use THAT money towards the laptop you actually need?

even if you sold everything for half retail price, the company makes out ahead and you get what you wanted in the first place. I don't know how this would work where you are though....

You'll need to upgrade to more RAM, but otherwise, a great system.

Maybe someone was waiting for the appropriate time to quietly mail it to themselves....at home?

Or maybe the executive got let go before the computer was delivered. The original message doesn't mention if the executive ever got the computer or is still working for the company!! In any event, congrats on getting a nice setup!! By the way, what are you thinking about using for the the on-the-road presentations?
