Mac compared to Windows

Just some observations.
I have had Macs since the SE30 days. I use PCs at work. I rarely need to update anything on my macs.
A few months back I got a great price on a EEE PC 900xp netbook to be used for traveling. Great little unit(2 lbs), started out with a 8gb SSD. OK, add CCleaner to trim down and keep the crap from piling up on the C drive. Added AVG anti Virus, great free program but did notice a drop in speed.
Unlike my Mac, where I just log on and use w/o any Anti any thing programs. On the XP unit I first need to check for program updates, check for Microsoft fixes/updates, Check for AVG updates and then run a scan every couple of days at 30 - 40 minutes each, Check for CCleaner updates and then run the program. etc, etc
I bumped up the ram to 2gb, no problem except I had to update the BIOS for this to work. Simple procedure, but if it goes wrong you "brick" the unit.
I have been experimenting with some long range WIFI antennas, the EEE PC with a external USD WIFI is great for this. I started to notice that on a few of the signals I was seeing the normal "linksys" then it would quickly flash "US Airways Free WIFI" Great! A free WIFI provider!. Wrong! It is a nasty Bot Virus. Run all my programs and clean everything out again.
And then I sit down on my old Emac, log on enjoy, relax, no problems. Now if I could only get a small cheap Mac netbook. As a side note they are hacking the EEE PC to run OSX.

Look into getting a Dell Mini 10v and installing OS 10.6.1 (10.6.2 won't work).

You might find these threads interesting (if Dealmac doesn't mess with the links).

Good luck.

Actually, the second thread is not as helpful as I thought. It's mostly about trying to speed up an old Mac laptop, or replace it with a cheaper new Mac laptop (although the title is about setting up a Hackintosh).

If you google around there is lots of info on setting up a Dell Mini 10v with OS X.

I run the free ClamWin [www.clamwin.com] on my Acer netbook running WindowsXP. I choose ClamWin because there is absolutely NO performance hit when using ClamWin - which is very important when running on slower machines. Please note that ClamWin Free Antivirus does not include an on-access real-time scanner. You need to manually scan a file in order to detect a virus or spyware.

Secondly, I make a habit of never using Internet Explorer to browse the internet. I use Firefox.

The eeeuser.com forums has a great section on the running OSX on the EEE PC. I second the vote for Firefox.

Looks like they pulled the code that used to rewrite links to "there" during one of the forum software upgrades.
