This is my first venture into the Windows world. i inherited my aunt's Compaq Presario SR1103WM with XP Home, which only has a 40 GB hard drive. What kind would I use for a 2nd hard drive?

Without looking it up, I would say IDE/ATA and it might have a problem with drives either over 80 GB or over 137 GB.

Better than expected. 2.5 GHz Celeron D chip (crippled P4). Yeah, IDE drive and no SATA connectors. Specs say IDE UDMA 100/66, so that should support drives over 137 GB (it could need a BIOS update for that).

If she has all the data off it, you might want to use the Factory Reset option, then install XP SP2, SP3 (start IE and go to [windowsupdate.microsoft.com], it is in the Tools menu) and then anti-virus programs.
